Binissalem, Mallorca’s wine-growing Region

Between 902 and 1229, Mallorca was ruled by the Arabs, and it was they who gave Binissalem its name. However, this quiet village is now best known as a wine-growing region.

Binissalem and wine

Today, Binissalem is a small town in the centre of Mallorca, with a population of almost 8,000, which stands out particularly in two areas:

1/ The industry centred on ‘Pedra de Binissalem’: the extraction, processing and working of this high-quality stone, similar to marble, which is used in the finest parts of buildings.

2/ Even better known is the production of quality wine, based on native grape varieties. The village’s name also gave its name to the “Binissalem – Mallorca Designation of Origin”, established as early as 1991 and therefore the oldest DO on the island.

The Binissalem Designation of Origin

As of today, the Binissalem-Mallorca DO covers an area of around 155 km² and comprises 11 wineries, which have registered some 600 hectares dedicated to red and white grapes. Among these, the native varieties Mantonegro (red), with 168 hectares, and Moll (white), with 82 hectares, stand out.

The vineyard landscape in the Binissalem region

There are five municipalities that make up this wine-growing region: Binissalem, Santa María del Camí, Consell, Santa Eugenia and Sancellas. This area is in the central part of the island; the terrain is fairly flat and wherever you look you’ll be surrounded by extensive vineyards. It’s ideal for exploring by bike or motorbike, and especially the smaller villages such as Biniali or Biniagual, where you’ll also find wineries to visit.

Wine, gastronomy and Mallorcan culture

And if you really want to experience the authentic atmosphere of Binissalem, be sure to take part in the “Festes d’es Vermar” (Grape Harvest Festival), which takes place every year from the first week of September until the end of the month. It’s almost four weeks of cultural and sporting activities, gastronomic events and, above all, with local wine as the main focus. The best thing to do is check all the details in the comprehensive programme published by Binissalem Town Council.
