The black vulture in Mallorca: a jewel of the Tramuntana’s wildlife
Mallorca is known primarily as a tourist destination, but our island boasts a wealth of natural beauty and is home to unique species such as the black vulture, one of Europe’s most impressive birds.
What is the “voltor negre” or black vulture?
The name ‘voltor’ is the local Mallorcan term for the black vulture. The scientific name for the “Voltor negre” is Aegypius monachus and, interestingly, Mallorca is the only island in the world with a population of these birds.
Nature is wise and has assigned every living being a specific role in the natural cycle, and the vulture has been given a role that may not be very pleasant, but is certainly very important. It is a scavenger that helps keep the environment clean, as it feeds on the carcasses of other animals.
It is the largest bird in Europe, weighing around 8 kilos and with a wingspan of almost 3 metres from tip to tip.

In the 1980s, the species was on the brink of extinction on our island, as the birds were considered a nuisance and were shot, captured or poisoned. Thanks to various awareness-raising, reintroduction and conservation programmes, there now appears to be a healthy and stable population of around 45 pairs and a total of 250 birds. They live on the cliffs of the Serra de Tramuntana and, if you go hiking in the mountains, you’re sure to see them flying.
A symbol of Mallorcan nature
Mallorca’s “Voltor negre” is impressive: black, with enormous wings, silent, and with a truly majestic flight.
For nature lovers, and especially for birdwatchers, spotting a “Voltor negre” in flight will surely be one of the most special experiences during your stay in Mallorca.
Where to find out more about the black vulture of Mallorca
If you’d like to find out more about the Voltor negre, we’d definitely recommend a visit to Campanet, to the Mediterranean Wildlife Foundation (FVSM), where, as well as several vultures that are lovingly cared for, a number of specialists will explain the unique characteristics of these animals in great detail.
