Binissalem – Grape harvest festival
July and August are over, holidays too. It’s time to go back to everyday reality, to work the older ones, to class the younger ones. But September is not as serious and boring a month as it seems, at least in Binissalem, where the grape harvest festival is organized (” Festa d’es Vermar” o “Sa Vermada”in Mallorcan).
As you probably already know, this town in the Raiguer region is known for its quality wines, as well as giving its name to the “DO Binissalem-Mallorca”.
Grape harvest festival
The program of festivities traditionally lasts until the last Sunday of September and is long and varied in activities:
Courses and wine tastings, decoration of bottles and carriages, art exhibitions, plays, “glosadors” competition, cycling and athletics races, music groups and performances… there is something for everyone.
And for those who want more excitement we can recommend 3 things:
- “Concurs de trepitjadors” (Traditional grape treading) (2 people in a barrel)
- “Correguda de botes” (Race making a wine barrel spin as fast as possible)
…and perhaps the most spectacular of all:
- “Battle of raïm” (Filed battle, against everybody, throwing grapes)
During these days you will also be able to appreciate the typical costumes worn by some binissalemers. Whether the “climber” white or raw, or the “pagés/pagesa”, more colorful and higher quality.
At the end of these hard days you have to recharge your batteries, so the “Sopar a la fresca” is the ideal moment. For those of you who don’t know it, it’s something worth seeing, as tables are set up in all the streets of the village and Binissalem’s neighbors, friends and guests dine together in the open air. Of course, in addition to a very good atmosphere and good food, you can taste the typical Fideus de Vermar and the best wines from Binissalem.
